Cat Software Yaesu Ft 736r Manual
Ham Radio Deluxe and the FT-736RThe YaesuFT-736R is a legendary radio in amateur satellite circles. One problem, however, has been its inability to work with the wonderful Ham Radio Deluxesoftware. The 736 has an early implementation of the CAT interface, andunfortunately the only items that can be queried from the 736 thru the CATinterface are the squelch condition and the S Meter value. Ham radio deluxe isbuilt on a model that requires much more to be read from the radio, so it seemsthey are incompatible. Until NOW!This project started in thesummer of 2010.
My idea was to write some software that would appear to HRD asa radio. I surveyed all of the radios supported by HRD and found the FT-847 tobe the best candidate in terms of compatibility and functionality. My softwarefakes out HRD into thinking it is talking to an FT-847, hence the term“emulator”. I then take all of the information stored in registers in myvirtual FT-847 in my software and use them to control the 736.

The effortworked perfectly, and I released a Youtube video at.This software was not meantto be a final implementation, rather it was a proof of concept that the ideawould work. My intention was to eventually get around to doing the same thingin hardware. The Windows software implementation needs three serial ports towork, or a serial port emulator and 1 “real” serial port. The hardware approachwould just be a simple small box between the computer running HRD and the 736.In my Youtubevideo, I mentioned the hardware approach and my willingness to work with othersto make it happen. In the spirit of true ham radio collaboration, one finefellow took up the challenge, Chuck N6BIL.
I sent him my software and describedwhat I did and gave him some data, and he ran with it. He has duplicated mywindows approach in the hardware implementation I had envisioned. He made hisown Youtube video showing his results at.Originally, I had decided notto release my windows software.

I considered it merely a tool for producing thehardware version. The software is not pretty and polished.
I have gotten somany requests for it, that I will make it available here, but the price isabsolutely no support since this is free. I will give a brief description thatI gave to Chuck on how to set it up and that is all.Information on Chuck’shardware version will appear here as well. The schematic and board files, aswell as software will be available for download.Somebody has taken the effortof Chuck and myself and now offers a complete ready to use package.
See thelink belowFeel free to leave commentson the Youtube sites.Information on my Softwareversion can be found.Information on ChucksHardware version can be found.A fully built and tested product is now available from Dave Norris,KG9AE. See his product page at73 Dave KA6BFB.
Looked quickly for some info and only found this:I have an FT-736r and am trying to use CAT control via a cable (from somewhere. Can't recall whereI purchased it. Was quite a while ago).Bringing up satpc32 everything is setup per their 'hints'. Baud @ 4800, and in my case COM4 (and the port does 'appear' in the COM list when I plug the USB cable in). When not plugged in, Satpc32 does complain about not reaching the radio, however, when I turn on the radiothen start up the program, and select a satellite (with the proper up/down links matching on the radio and in the program).
It does not seem to control the radio. Ie, the rcv/xmit frequencies don't track the program, transmit by pushing the mic doesn't switch. There aren't many operating hints, nor troubleshooting hints around that I've found. Any good way to test that the drivers/cable/radio cat port is good?also I read comments like 'the CAT indicator is on' etc.Where is the CAT indicator?
I haven't found anything in the manual regarding CAT except pg 44 which talks about the interface itself, nothing about operating using CAT control. A couple things. Make sure you print out and read the 'Readme (Yaesu)' file included in satpc32. There are many hints on how to use the radio. Two make sure you have the 736R manual and read up on the sat operation mode.SatPC32, make sure you have the correct doppler information. You need to set up two duplex memory channels. One VHF Down/UHF UP and another UHF Down/VHF Up.
You use those to work the birds.Important startup procedure. Radio must be turned on first use one of the memory channels that were set up. Then SatPC32. The radio will go into sat mode. Read section 4.17 of the 736 manual on sat operation in full duplex mode.It discusses tracking calibration. SatPC32 also has a feature in the cat window to adjust the uplink calibration on a specific bird.Edited. Added.set up two duplex memory channels.Steve NS3L.
Steve and Steve,Thanks, I've worked sats with this rig already, manually, and I have the tone board. It did not come with my rig, purchased used. The tone board works fine as I've used it to check in on our local club's repeater.
One thing I have to do is replace the lithium battery since it no longer keeps the memories intact.I've read the hints file, and much of the manual. I still don't quite get the interaction of satpc32 with the radio yet, I don't quite know how to test the CAT interface independently, and I don't understand how and when satpc32 turns on and off CAT mode on the radio.I'll try to re-read everything but it's wasn't clear the first time around.
Not knowing who made this cable doesn't help since I'm not sure whether RTS+12 or DTR+12 should be set ( for example, I do need RTS+12 set when using the USB interface cable to my ic706 when running fldigi ).
